The Lone Sailor is an iconic symbol of the Navy Memorial’s mission to Honor, Recognize, and Celebrate the men and women of the Sea Services, past, present, and future; and to Inform the public about their service.
The original Lone Sailor Statue took command of his station at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC on October 13th, 1987. The statue was designed by sculptor Stanley Bleifeld, who enlisted in the Navy during WWII.
Artifacts from eight U.S. Navy ships were melted into the bronze during the casting process. These eight ships span the Navy’s history and will forever be a part of the Lone Sailor legacy.
The Navy Memorial’s Statue City Program began in 1997 with the placement of a Lone Sailor Statue at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL. There are now 19 Lone Sailor Statues around the world.
The Cleveland Lone Sailor Monument Plaza provides a meaningful location for special ceremonies, including: enlistments, commissionings, advancements, promotions, retirements and memorial services.
In addition to the iconic statue, the Plaza includes two Honor and Memorial Walls featuring personalized plaques with the names of those who have served or are presently serving the Nation in America’s Sea Services.
Reclaimed granite stones from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument have been incorporated into the Plaza. They offer a historical link to Clevelanders’ distinguished service to the Union in the American Civil War.
