CLEVELAND — The USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation today announced the appointments of Nick Lippert as Managing Director and Laura Gray as Director of Development, effective April 7, 2025. These leadership additions come at a pivotal moment as the Foundation accelerates preparations for the commissioning of the future USS Cleveland (LCS-31) later this year.
Lippert, a Northeast Ohio native, brings extensive experience in public affairs, strategic communications, and civic engagement from his service as a Naval officer. Gray, a passionate
advocate and award-winning development professional, joins the Foundation with a strong track record in fundraising, nonprofit leadership, and community outreach.
“This is a transformative moment for the Foundation,” said Matt Previts, Chair of the USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation. “Nick and Laura bring a powerful combination of leadership,
service, and Northeast Ohio heart. Together, they will drive our mission forward and help us ensure the ship and its crew are supported not just at commissioning—but for the entire journey ahead.”
As Managing Director, Lippert will oversee the Foundation’s operations, strategic initiatives, and engagement efforts. A graduate of The Ohio State University, he commissioned into the U.S. Navy in 2018 and has served in roles spanning special operations training, flight training, and international strategic communications. He most recently served as Deputy Director of
Communications for a Navy Carrier Strike Group deployed to the Indo-Pacific and Middle East.
“The USS Cleveland is more than a ship, it’s a symbol of our city’s legacy, strength, and pride,” said Lippert. “It’s an incredible honor to lead this effort on behalf of the city I call home and the Sailors who will carry Cleveland’s name across the globe.”
In her role as Director of Development, Gray will lead all fundraising, development, and outreach initiatives, forging connections with Northeast Ohio citizens, corporations, schools, and
veteran organizations. A Bowling Green State University graduate, she has held leadership roles at nonprofits nationwide and previously served as Director of Development for The ALS
Association. Gray is also the founder of IPride, a youth empowerment program, and has served as President of The Andy Nowacki Foundation.
“I firmly believe in the power of community and in the heart of Cleveland, ” said Gray. “This ship, and the people it represents, are deserving of our steadfast support. It is an honor and privilege to rally our city on behalf of the future USS Cleveland.”
The USS Cleveland (LCS-31) will be the fourth U.S. Navy vessel to bear the city’s name and the first to be commissioned in Cleveland. The USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to giving the ship and its crew world-class support throughout the vessel’s service life.
