CLEVELAND – The USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation (USSCLF) today announced that the future USS Cleveland (LCS 31) is scheduled to be commissioned in May 2026 in Cleveland, Ohio, marking the first time in the 250-year history of the United States that a U.S. Navy warship will be commissioned in the State of Ohio.
While the exact commissioning date will be formally released by the U.S. Navy, the USSCLF continues close coordination with Navy leadership to ensure the ceremony reflects the historic significance of this moment and the magnitude befitting the ship, its crew, and the people of Cleveland. Commissioning schedules for Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) are carefully aligned with ship readiness, crew training, and broader fleet priorities. The Navy regularly updates commissioning timelines to reflect operational requirements and overall force planning.
A Historic First for the Nation and for Ohio
This commissioning represents a moment unmatched in American naval history. To honor this extraordinary first, USS Cleveland Commissioning Week will extend far beyond the traditional schedule of events, becoming a weeklong celebration of unprecedented scale that brings together sailors, families, veterans, leaders, and the entire Northeast Ohio community.
“This is a special moment, not only for the sailors who will serve onboard the USS Cleveland, but for our entire community,” said Nick Lippert, Managing Director of the USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation. “As we look ahead to next spring, commissioning week will be a source of pride for our city and the region, as well as an opportunity to support those who serve and defend our great nation.”
The USS Cleveland (LCS 31) will be the fourth U.S. Navy vessel to bear the city’s name, and its commissioning will serve as a powerful symbol of the enduring legacy that connects the Navy to the people of Northeast Ohio.
